Protect and Detect Cancer Screenings

For most people, particularly those with a family history of cancer, taking steps to reduce their risk of developing cancer is of great importance. Baptist Cancer Services' Protect and Detect Cancer Screenings , available at the Hederman Cancer Center, offer affordable and clinically significant screenings designed to identify a person's risk factors, and to detect cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage.

Only $25, the screening program begins with a complete health history and lifestyle assessment taken by a certified family nurse practitioner specially trained to work with participants in the program.

All participants will receive a complete blood count blood test. Screenings also include examination of the neck, oral cavity, lymph nodes and skin. In addition, based on American Cancer Society guidelines for age and sex.

Women will receive:

• pap smear
• clinical breast exam
• pelvic exam
• instruction on proper technique for breast self-exams
• digital rectal exam (age appropriate)
• fecal occult blood test (age appropriate)

Men will receive:

• testicular exam
• digital rectal exam (age appropriate)
• prostate specific antigen (age appropriate)
• instruction on proper technique for testicular self-exam

The nurse practitioner will provide immediate feedback on the results of physical exams. Lab results will be mailed upon request. In addition, the nurse practitioner will develop a personalized Healthy Lifestyle Plan for each individual, with recommendations for future screenings or examinations. At the participant's physician's request, copies of examination findings and recommendations will be mailed.

Should any of the screenings indicate a need for further assessment, the nurse practitioner will refer the participant to a physician for follow-up.
