Thoracic Surgery at Baptist

Thoracic surgery is a surgical subspecialty concentrating on diseases of the chest. General thoracic surgeons treat diseases of the lungs, esophagus, chest wall, and mediastinum (the middle section of the chest cavity).

Your physician may refer you to the Thoracic Surgery program at Baptist for a number of conditions that require specialized surgery. Some of these include:
• lung cancer surgery
• esophageal cancer surgery
• thymus cancer surgery
• mediastinal tumors
• benign tumors in the thoracic cavity, including schwannoma
• bronchogenic cysts
• pleural diseases such as effusions (excess fluid that has accumulated in the pleural cavity), and empyema (a collection of pus in the pleural cavity)
• collapsed lungs
• hyperhidrosis, or “sweaty palms”

• chest wall problems, including pectus excavatum or “sunken chest”

Depending on the diagnosis, some patients are able to be treated with minimally invasive techniques, such as the video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy for the treatment of lung cancer. This allows complete removal of lung cancers via three small incisions. The procedure greatly reduces the pain associated with thoracotomy (opening the chest), and allows a shorter hospital stay. Thoracic surgeon A. Michael Koury, MD, of Baptist Medical Clinic | Thoracic Surgery, leads Baptist’s Thoracic Surgery program.
