Competence

It’s a matter of historical fact that Baptist was the first hospital in Jackson. For nearly a century, we’ve been striving to meet the healthcare needs of our community—and now state and region—by providing up-to-date clinical care combined with one-on-one attention.

The same dedication that drove us to become Jackson’s first hospital has propelled us to achieve many other firsts. In our cardiovascular program, we were Mississippi’s first private hospital to perform open-heart surgery more than 30 years ago. In the first decade of the new millennium, Baptist was first in Mississippi to offer the drug eluting—or drug coated—stents. Baptist was also the first hospital in Mississippi to provide robotic-enhanced, minimally invasive heart valve surgery. And most recently, Baptist became the first hospital in Mississippi to offer a program focused on the care of patients with atrial fibrillation. Physicians in our cardiovascular program are actively involved in national clinical research programs and quality initiatives.

Baptist Cancer Services was the first hospital in a four-state region to offer knifeless surgery via the CyberKnife, the world's only robotic radiosurgery system designed to treat tumors anywhere in the body with sub-millimeter accuracy. Oncologists at Baptist also offer patients the opportunity to participate in clinical trials where appropriate for their care.

Baptist’s services for mothers and babies marked another first when the March of Dimes selected Baptist to be the first in the state for its NICU Family Support program. The NICU Family Support program provides information and comfort to families during the NICU hospitalization of their newborn, during the transition home, and in the event of a newborn death. It also contributes to NICU staff professional development and promotes the philosophy of family-centered care throughout the NICU.

Two key factors regarding our clinical services are the credentials and long tenure of our clinical staff. Every physician on staff at Baptist is board certified or board eligible in his or her respective specialty. Other clinical staffs pursue advanced certifications in their areas of expertise. For example, registered nurses with certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Critical Care attend patients before and after procedures. Radiology technologists with advanced training and certifications in the area of echocardiography, vascular ultrasound, nuclear cardiology and electrophysiology are an integral part of the cardiovascular team. We are fortunate to have highly experienced nurses and other clinicians who have been at Baptist for more than 20 years.
