Mississippi IVF Team Celebrates Birth of 100th Baby

Jackson, Miss. - March 28, 2003 - For five years Lee and Tammy Kimbrell of Brandon, Miss. have dreamed of the children that would make their family complete. On February 11, 2003, their dream became a reality with the birth of twins, Claudia and Ryan at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Miss. Being born just two minutes apart, Ryan became the 100th baby to be born through in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment at the Mississippi Fertility Institute at the Women's Specialty Center. Mississippi Fertility Institute was established in 1999 by John D. Isaacs, Jr., MD, a double board-certified infertility specialist.

"Trying to have a child was a long, emotional battle," Tammy said. "Dr. Isaacs and his staff always took our emotions into consideration. They all made us feel like we were going through this with family."

According to Dr. Isaacs, Tammy went through a number of surgeries and procedures for infertility related to endometriosis, which is considered one of the major causes of female infertility. She was subsequently able to achieve pregnancy with her first cycle of treatment with IVF.

Endometriosis is a common yet poorly understood disease that can affect women of any socioeconomic class, age or race. It is estimated that between 10 and 20 percent of American women of childbearing age have endometriosis. While some women with endometriosis may have severe pelvic pain, others who have the condition have no symptoms. Endometriosis with extensive scarring and adhesions on the ovaries or fallopian tubes may affect fertility. In fact, about 40 percent of women with infertility have endometriosis, compared to about 5 percent of fertile women.

"Tammy and Lee have worked so hard to have a baby it gives us great joy to see them so blessed. They are a perfect example of what we can accomplish when couples trust us to help them," Dr. Isaacs said.

Dr. Isaacs continued to state that this is truly an exciting time for in vitro fertilization.

"Treatment with IVF is now easier, and more affordable than ever and success rates continue to improve," Dr. Isaacs added.
